Bleeding Harley Brakes
How to bleed with and without ABS.
Harley-validated
Without ABS
- Pump the lever, hold, open the bleeder, close, release lever
- Repeat until clean fluid comes out with no bubbles
- Keep the reservoir topped up
With ABS
- Normal bleed at the calipers
- To cycle the module: you need a J1850/CAN scanner
- Use service mode on Digital Tech or Dynojet
Safety & cautions
- NEVER pump the lever with no fluid — pushes piston and leaks
- Use ONLY DOT 4 (Harley system) — DOT 5 silicone only on specific pre-2006 bikes
- Test brakes at low speed before hitting the road
- New pads: 100 miles of bedding-in, no hard braking
Average US cost (USD)
- DIY front pads: $40-90 a pair (EBC, Lyndall, Galfer)
- Dealer pads + bleed: $220-380
- New front rotor pair: $300-600
- Brembo radial upgrade: $1,500-2,800 installed
When to see a mechanic
- Lever goes to the bar even after bleeding
- Visibly warped or wavy rotor
- ABS warning stays on
Quick questions
Can I use car brake pads?
No. Different compound and shape — works worse and is illegal in the US.
How long do pads last?
Front: 10-15k mi. Rear: 15-25k mi. Loaded touring cuts that by 30%.
