Exhaust
Back Pressure — Myth or Reality
Understanding the concept.
Harley-validated
The Truth
- You don't need back pressure — you need exhaust gas velocity
- A proper baffle maintains scavenging
- Open headers lose low-end torque
- A tune can only partially compensate
Safety & cautions
- New exhaust without a tune = lean mixture, burned valve in 3,000 mi
- Above 92 dBA = illegal in CA, EPA stamp required
- Header runs at 1,100°F — heat shields are a must
Average US cost (USD)
- Vance & Hines slip-on pair: $400-650
- Bassani 2-into-1 full system: $900-1,400
- Power Vision 3 tune: $480 + dyno $250
- Heat wrap kit: $40-80
When to see a mechanic
- Excessive pops & bangs = very lean mixture (dangerous)
- Header flange leak = torque it up and replace the gasket
Quick questions
Does a slip-on need a tune?
Technically yes. Slip-ons shift backpressure enough to need new AFR mapping.
Louder exhaust = more power?
Myth. Sound ≠ flow. Internal design matters more than dB.
