Stator — Common Failure
When the stator needs replacing.
Harley-validated
Test
- Resistance between AC phases: ~0.2Ω
- Grounded check: infinite
- AC output at 2000 RPM: 18-20V per phase
- Failure = battery doesn't charge even with a new regulator
Safety & cautions
- Always disconnect NEGATIVE first, positive last when reconnecting
- AGM battery short = explosion (hydrogen gas)
- Use a CAT III multimeter, always OEM-rated fuses
Average US cost (USD)
- Yuasa H-D AGM battery: $180-260
- Battery Tender Plus charger: $55
- Stator (Touring): $280-450 + $300 labor
- Voltage regulator: $180-340
When to see a mechanic
- Charging voltage below 13.6V at 3,000 rpm = stator/reg
- Starter clicks but won't crank even with a new battery
- ABS, ECM, or TSM codes that won't clear
Quick questions
How long does the battery last?
3-5 years on a Battery Tender. 1-2 years without.
Can I use a lithium battery?
Yes, Antigravity or Shorai — saves 10 lb, but needs a compatible regulator and care in the cold.
