When to Replace a Tire
Age and depth.
Harley-validated
Criteria
- Tread depth below 2/32" (1.6 mm)
- Age over 6 years even with tread (check DOT code on sidewall)
- Never repair sidewall punctures
- Tread punctures only with an internal plug+patch combo
Safety & cautions
- NEVER mix different brands front/rear (unpredictable handling)
- Motorcycle tires have a DOT date — don't buy ones over 5 years old
- Always check pressure cold — hot reads 2-4 psi higher
Average US cost (USD)
- Dunlop D407/408 Touring pair: $380-460 + mounting
- Michelin Commander III pair: $440-540
- Shop mounting + balance: $60-120
- TPMS sensor: $90-160
When to see a mechanic
- New vibration after mounting = balance issue
- Cupping wear = bad suspension or wrong pressure
Quick questions
Can I plug a rear puncture?
Internal plug (not the external mushroom) is tolerated by shops, but Harley/DOT recommend replacement.
