Transmission
Gear Ratios
How each ratio affects riding.
Harley-validated
Concepts
- Final drive (pulley/sprocket) changes everything
- Smaller front pulley = more acceleration, less top speed
- Larger rear pulley = same thing
- 23T/65T is common on Touring; 32T/66T on Softail
Safety & cautions
- Clutch must be FULLY pulled before shifting at a stop
- Never force the shifter — something is engaged wrong
- Watch out for hot transmission oil (~250°F after riding)
Average US cost (USD)
- Trans oil change (Harley Formula+): $35-55 DIY
- Dealer clutch adjustment: $90-150
- Clutch pack replacement: $400-700
- Full transmission rebuild: $1,800-3,500
When to see a mechanic
- Jumping out of gear under acceleration
- Metallic grinding when engaging first
- Clutch slipping even after being adjusted
Quick questions
Why can't I find neutral?
Common on a stopped Harley. Drop to first, lift half a click — or roll 2 inches and try again.
Can I use car oil in the transmission?
NO. Additives attack the clutch pack. Use Formula+ or Spectro/Amsoil V-Twin equivalent.
